In 1973, Raymond Gray was convicted in Detroit, Michigan of a murder he did not commit and sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was based solely on the unreliable testimony of two eyewitnesses.

After spending 10 years in prison, Ray met the true perpetrator of the murder who signed a sworn affidavit confessing that he and another man committed the crime for which Ray was convicted. At a motion for a new trial, the man took the stand and told the judge that he had personal knowledge of the crime; but after being warned by the prosecutor that he would be charged and prosecuted for the murder if he implicated himself, he invoked his right against self-incrimination by remaining silent.

Ray has been in prison for 37 years despite the fact that significant evidence has been uncovered to support his claim of innocence. Members of the International Review Committee at the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC) have thoroughly reviewed and investigated Ray's case and are convinced of his innocence. The case was recently officially endorsed by AIDWYC's board of directors.

AIDWYC has assembled a team of private investigators, journalists, and pro bono lawyers to help free Ray Gray. Officials from Proving Innocence and Humanity for Prisoners are also a part of the team. And while all of these individuals graciously donate their time, we still require funds to help with investigation and legal representation.

Ray has painted several pieces that convey the holiday spirit, and we have used this art to create holiday greeting cards. Students from a number of universities in both Canada and the United States have come together to help raise funds by selling these greeting cards. The students are from: York University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto, University of Guelph at Humber, Michigan State University College of Law, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
