What is there about art that makes it art?
Ray and I spent almost 50 years seeking his release of his physical being from prison. He was doing a life without parole sentence for a crime he did not commit. I say it that way because he never allowed his spirit to be imprisoned. Ray was a boxer and an artist from his earliest memories, eventually winning the Golden Gloves 4 times and having one of his pieces shown at the Detroit Institute of Arts, with other grade school artists. So, when he had just turned 21, he was a young man with a bright future. But a case of mistaken identity turned his life in a different direction.
Throughout his ordeal Ray used chalk, pencils, rocks, blood, and paint - anything that would make an image. When nothing physical was available he used the air and his imagination. The result was and is a miracle. He often signed his work Free Ray Gray. It was a cry for Freedom.
His work is in several styles, reflecting the influence of the great Masters, and the vision of a world filled with color, and his imagination.
Ray's Universe is filled with elephants with butterfly ears, little Arab girls trying to read while bullets destroy her world, Rabbis, mannequins who play musical instruments, historical characters, even Human Origin stories. His colors are brilliant. His people are known to us, from the Univeral Woman to Mother Earth to Hannibal Braca crossing the Alps, even to the Soldier wading in polluted water while walking in his Truth. Our logo, a mannequin standing alone is titled Free At Last.
Ray was released from prison In 2021.
